Hockey Development - Hockey Coaching Drills

: Hockey Agility DrillsIce hockey is a game played on ice in which two opposing teams of skaters, using curved sticks, try to drive a puck into the opponent's goal. Sounds difficult? Well, there are a lot of gifted players and goalies out there. However, most will never see their true potential. Good coaches and trainers bring out the best in players by helping them hone their skills, learn how to play on a team, and in may cases, inspire them to be their best. Now, here are some hockey coaching drills.

The first drill is called "give, go, shoot". The focus of this drill is to develop forwards skills in the offensive zone. In particular, moving their feet while passing, receiving, and shooting. Place a pile of pucks in each corner and group the forwards together in one corner. F1 starts the drill with a pass to P1. F1 skates up the wall towards P1 and receives the puck right back. F1 receives the puck and explodes into the slot area. F1 then makes a quick pass to P2 and continues to drive to the net where they will receive the pass back from P2. F1 should try to shoot off the pass or as quickly as possible. After the shot F1 continues to skate into the opposite corner to pick up a puck and repeat out of the opposite corner.

The second drill, basic sprinting, is designed to improve speed and agility. Set two cones out ten to twenty meters apart. Sprint from one cone to the next and slowly jog back to the start. Vary the start of the sprint to make the drill more sport specific. For example, you can face backwards, lie down, jump up, pretend to receive a pass, jump to head a ball, and so on.

Remember that a hockey training program must meet the demands of a very physically challenging, multi-sprint sport.
